Official Game Thread: Bulls at Hawks

A Nets starter, 12 hours after beating half the Hawks.

 

Heading to The Farm for the Atlanta Hawks’ Sunday matinee? Arrive safely and, hopefully, by the time you arrive for the game with the Chicago Bulls (6:30 PM Eastern, Bally Sports Southeast and 92.9 FM in ATL, NBC Sports Chicago), you’ll have some decent ideas as to who you’ve paid to see play.

The Hawks (13-13… still in First Place, sort of!) are the least variable of the competitors today, coach Nate McMillan’s charges knowing they’ll need to prioritize a strong showing in front of the home faithful before trekking to Memphis for a Monday night run with the Grizzlies. Atlanta hasn’t dropped four straight games since an MLK Day win snipped a five-game skid back in January.

Onyeka Okongwu (sore foot) joins De’Andre Hunter (strained hip) with Questionable designations. If you’ve been pining for some major minutes for Frank Kaminsky, you could be in for a treat.

The Bulls caught a bit of a break last night, as Luka was mothballed by the Mavs before their road SEGABABA in Chicago, and Billy Donovan’s club (11-14) made Doncic look like DPOY while tuning up Dallas with 144 points (incl. a franchise-record 82 in the first half) in a 29-point breeze.

Only Patrick Williams and DeMar DeRozan (28 points, 9-for-13 FGs, 9-for-9 FTs) exceeded 30 minutes of floor burn as Donovan was able to field a deep rotation after the intermission. Zach LaVine has been injury-managed out of recent SEGABABAs, but he was rested for the whole fourth quarter on Saturday, then insisted postgame that he will be playing today in The A. How much? That’s up to Billy D.

Whatever the Bulls decide to DNP-Rest, one can’t imagine it will be any more brazen than what the Nets pulled last night. They couldn’t rest one starter back home in Brooklyn on Friday night, when the Hawks nearly limped their way to an upset? I mean, c’mon.

And look what a gift the Nets served up for the impregnable Tyrese Halliburton, Lloyd Pierce and the Pacers ahead of yesterday’s road game in Indy? Shoot-first, think-second Cameron Thomas, are you kidding me? How could anyone expect Patty Mills and Markieff Morris to hold up for 30-35 minutes? And when has Edmond Sumner ever beaten anybody with his corner jumpshot? Was Ed Asner unavailable, Brooklyn? Psshh. Hope you enjoyed your gift horse, Pacers! Probably went right ahead and looked it in the mouth, I’m sure it didn’t matter.

Alex Caruso bruised his tailbone during yesterday's game and was left back in Chitown. Javonte Green was starting ahead of Patrick Williams, but he was out due to a sore knee and is upgraded to questionable for today's game.
