Official Game Thread: Hawks at Wizards

Most of us seem to have forgotten some things about last summer and the beginning of the season"

How did out three rookies preform in summer league?  How about our 2ndd year players?

When the Hawks opened the season they had several untried players.  Some turned out to be a bad fit and at least one (Parsons) never really played.  Great back up PG, wasn't he.  So good that he and Parsons are both now history.

Back up for Collins had to start.  He did well enough to be traded for something.  Not all those big $$ salary players that left could say this.  Big if.  If our 2 new Hawks still recovering, can come into next season as a healthy Hawk, things will be so much better next season.

Even without any moves think we make the playoffs with good health next year. A big question mark right there on health of course. Starting next year with two vet centers and a young hybrid C/PF in Bruno. Cam and Kevin at SG and then some minutes for Cam at SF. JC and Hunter starting at forwards. Think we know who the starting PG is. Goodwin and Graham added and fitting in already. Not sure about Skal but am hopeful he helps out. We are much better than where we started this season. Schlenk will bring in the best talent that is available to us in the first as well. We will see about any trade or FA. Think how much of a mark we can actually make in the postseason is a better question.

We are required to spend a certain amount of the cap, so I know we will sign guys, I hope its for vets who can actually contribute, but only on short deals that keep us relevant in 2021 FAgency

Otherwise I agree that we have some good pieces in place already and are building chemistry.

One thing people dont talk about is what we lost by making all those trades last summer. We lost chemistry. Baze, Prince and Dedmon had been together for 2 years at that point. We didnt just add rookies and inexperience, we added vets who've also never played together before and who were rehabbing and not really working out with the team.

As long as we don't intentionally turn over 60% of the roster again, we should have much more momentum to start next year than we did this one

The bench needs a serious upgrade. We lack a scoring punch, a bucket getter off the bench, reliable 3 point shooting, etc.

PG, Wing, PF are our bench needs - Teague is too on again, off again.

Everyone's focused on FAs, but I've started looking at teams that have guys already signed that they want to move for cap reasons or just moving on.

Example: a team like Denver. Depending on the playoff success or not, If they are retooling, and trying to resign their FAs Milsap, Grant, Craig- if a guy like Will Barton becomes available in a cost cutting move.

(It's just an example, I'm not saying Denver will)

Didn't see the game, but was listening to it on the radio on and off.

If Cam's go to offensive move becomes the midrange step back, the sky may be the limit for him offensively.   The most impressive thing about him recently, is that he's getting anywhere he wants to on the floor.

I been saying, the most important skill for a professional scorer is getting to spots at will. That's what the Lou Williams of the world do. A lot of people like comparing Cam to PG13 but Cam scores a lot easier than a young PG.

Cam scores with ease like Tracy McGrady but Cam scores like a shooter while T-Mac was more of a slasher/post up player. Drawing more fouls is what's going to make Cam an elite consistent scorer.

OKoro probably wouldnt see the floor next season. And is Harrel our backup PF? I thought he was a center? I agree on Graham. Ill take him over Bembry..

Harrell defends PF better than C. The opposite of Collins. Dedmon is a spacer. Capela is a rim roller and screener. Harrell is a post up specialist and a rim roller.

Will Barton #1 on their resign list. Sap is #2. Craig could be a causality

Last nights FT disparity let me know that we need more guys who can draw fouls. Maybe Cam, Kev, and Dre can develop that aspect of their games too.

When we are going through offensive droughts, you have to be able to manufacture buckets by attacking the paint and getting to the line. Easy points, and throws the other teams rhythm off so they dont go on explosive scoring runs.

Trae is the only player we have that knows how to do this. Everyone has to make it a focus going forward.
(Plus, it may also help our guys stop picking up ticky tack fouls if they have themselves practiced all the tricks players will use to draw them)

You missed my point entirely and will Barton is NOT a free agent.

I'm talking about trading for bench guys that are already under contract, and not only looking at FAs.

Did you watch the game? His piss poor effort on defense and rebounding was one of the main reasons we lost...

I didn’t see the second half, I’ll take your word for it.  A Clippers Chris Paul-like assist to turn from a 2 guard is worth noting is all.  I’m the last person to think a gaudy raw stat sheet means a good game.  There’s no one here more critical of Trae  than me.

Cam Reddish since the All-Star Break - 7 games

17.4 pts, 3.1 rebs, 1.4 assists, on 50% shooting from the field, 40% from three and 85.7% from the free throw line.  All of this while playing good defense.

He's made an incredible leap from the beginning of the year.   This summer I hope he stays dedicated to his "craft" as they say.  Come back like Trae did and set the league on fire.

We can complain about Travis and LP, but Travis has proven to have an eye for talent and LP seems like his staff is good at developing the talent.

If you don't know by now, I'm a Cam stan...

Those assist numbers could go way up if he's given the responsibility to facilitate off of the pick and roll.  When he was struggling with his shot early in the year, he at least showed that he can facilitate as the PnR ball handler.  Once the handles get tighter and the turnovers go down, he'll have a well-rounded game.
