Official Game Thread: Mavericks at Hawks -- The Season Opener!

This is the best Hawks roster ever. They have both  offense and defense . Young legs and coaching.

Man, what a game.  Really happy to be back into the season and see State Farm Arena open and all of the the excited fans running around, Hawk Shop was absolutely packed with people buying stuff, all around good energy for the opener.  My thoughts:

• De'Andre Hunter.  Absolutely clamped Luka.  Made him look like a flustered high school star player out there.  He played well within the offense too but his defense was incredible.  Let's all pray for his knees tonight and every game night.
• Cam!!!!  I made a game time decision to take off my Trae jersey and wear #20 tonight and i made sure everyone in the arena knew i bought it 12 months ago.  My entire section joked about him never passing it (barely a joke) but after a few early misses, he was fire tonight.  His length is incredible on some of his finishes and is noticeable on defense as well.  His defensive instincts aren't as good as Hunter and he gambles a bit more, but he has the tools and athleticism to make our wing defense elite
• Collins playing like he deserves that contract and maybe will outplay it.  His game came so naturally tonight and he had a very efficient 16.
• I thought Trae had a very nice game tonight.  Missed a lot of shots but didn't force much and nearly a 3:1 assist turnover ratio.
• Bogi had a nice quiet game but played well
• The fact that this was a nationally televised game and Cam showed out was extremely satisfying.  The trade was never Luka for Trae and tonight we finally got to highlight the other piece of that one.  He's going to be good.  I hope we can retain him long term...
• Idk what they showed on TV but Luka whining to the refs after every play, during every timeout, during every stoppage, and any time they're within ear shot is so annoying.
• I'm a math guy and we're on pace to go 82-0

Couldn't have asked for a better opener than that. Being able to roll out a full bench unit of killers is unfair. And Hunter's defense on Luka was incredible.

One thing I will say about Collins...

This game wasn't even close. I feel we could've blown the Mavs out by way more if we played better in the first half. Let's keep this up heading into Cleveland.

 

Hunter was actually the player of the game IMO. He completely shut down Luka and whoever else he found himself guarding. Cam was awesome though, doubt he plays like this every night but he won't have to. This team is deep af. We didn't even have Galinari, and we basically smoked the Mavs with ease. Mavs might be worse than a lot of people thought though going from Carlisle to Kidd is an enormous step down.

I really have more than 10 post. I had to change my username twice over the years. Been following the Hawks since around 1982. Seen the Nique years,the smitty  years the  iso Joe years, the 60 win team and this is overall the best roster. Three deep across the board.Tree Rollins is a distance cousin of mine.

I saw that your profile said you were a long-time fan.  I was just having fun.  You've got some great history watching our team!

Man…if Cam and Dre were healthy in last years entire playoffs…I really think we would have made the finals.

Huerter has a beautiful mid range game

Dre locked down Luka…same Luka everyone has been talking about with the Luka Vs Trey trade.  Additionally, it was so satisfying to hear the commenters talk about Trey and Cam being the packaged Luka trade.  Sure enough, Cam showed his game on national television.  Hands down we have the best GM in the NBA.  Schlenk can scout, draft, assemble an elite nba team, and can sign free agents (including home grown talent).
 

I could feel the ATL energy.  The 2nd string looked so good.  Hell, the 3rd string bench looked hungrier (Jalen and Reef).  I’m so excited for our team this year.

Pretty hard to start out better than this... A team effort. Nobody has to go out there and drop 50.

Glad to see Mark Cuban go down.

The roster he has built for that team isn't that great.

Hopefully the Hawks can stay healthy this year.
