When Trae went down holding his ankle and the refs called a tech on him.. I was so pissed off. 

Why did Herro come to snatch the ball out of Trae's hand in the first place?

Actually... To me... the refs made some questionable calls.   Unexpected from a vet ref crew.

I will also say... 

Charles Barkley is right.   Maybe not for the whole game but for the end of the half, we have to play with better pace. 

I would like to see us transformed into a run and gun team but that won't happen this year.

To play with pace, you need to get stops.  It's hard to run just to be running.  And when you do that, you may end up taking more bad shots and have more turnovers.

We should always run when we get a stop.  But if they're making 3s, playing fast will get us in trouble.  I thought Trae actually needed to slow down during points of this game, not speed up.

And we haven't proven over a long stretch that we can run and gun with anyone.

That was a situation where the refs lost control.  Yes, Trae shouldn't have taken a swipe at the turd but the refs gotta have situational awareness.  If you, as a ref, are tardy getting to the scrum and that happens it's gotta be a no-call or double-techs.  It's not Herro's fkng job to get the freaking ball.  It's the refs.  Do your fkng job.  As it played out, they punished Trae for their own tardiness essentially.

And lets be real for a second.  Because they totally missed the foul (him stepping on Herro's foot - which is cheap AF but is a foul) and instead granted MIA a turnover, they assumed Trae was faking.  And, since he was faking(sic), the swipe must've been worthy of a T.

Fair or unfair, the refs are still in their feelings about the rule changes and we continue to see effects of it.  Usually it's the rigid interpretation of continuation, exacerbated by the liberal interpretation granted to others.  Tonight it was the stupid T.

That call on Trae for "pushing" Herro was ridiculous.  Something else I don't understand after rule changes are shooting fouls.  Trae gets so many obscure calls where the other team fouls him while shooting and it's a side out.  Jimmy Butler is driving to the basket and someone swats at his dribbling hand and he's shooting two.  

This was such a statement game, though.  They have led for two straight games wire to wire.  Miami hit back in the 3rd quarter and we stood our ground in the 4th.  DJM with the big boy shot.  That first half was so much fun to watch.  

15-8 in games that Capela and Hunter are both available.

It's 'ref-venge'.  There's no other explanation.  Technically, they're right(ish) to refuse Trae shooting fouls.  But the problem is, if you're right(sic) to deny Trae, you can't allow leeway on the other end.  It can't be both, it's gotta be either/or.  That's my issue.

There's a list of obvious foul-baiting players who fly under the radar.  Jimi Buttler is one.  Sorry, toy can't convince me a guy that got 23 fts in one game is fouled every single one of those plays.  The foul Collins got by getting kicked on Buttler's fadeaway was embarrassing for the refs, but I digress.  Siakim, Beal, Derozen, and others.  All foul-baiters as much as Trae is.  Oddly, no one ever calls them out.

The offense has looked better lately as far as ball movement.

They still haven't fully made me believe yet, but I can say I'm cautiously optimistic.

Until game 30 or so he was driving me crazy because he just took all of the shots he could take. 

Then something happened, and he not only is playing better and taking only the better shots, but he's hitting them at a very high clip.

 

I couldn't be more pleased with AJ's play. I LOVE HIS CONFIDENCE.

And to be fair, JJ's play is getting me very excited as well. Too bad he didn't play today.

Is he calling a time out, is he mad on the sideline when they do this. Is he darling a specific play that they are ignoring?

I guess for me playing with pace isn't just playing fast. It's getting into offensive sets quicker instead of holding the ball on one spot while playing against a set defense. Move the ball and bodies.

We had Tony Brothers in this game. He is 100% a Hawk hater and especially hates Trae Young. The refs went out of their way especially in the 2nd half to try and give this game to Miami. Thankfully our guys held on and wouldn't let that happen.

I'd like to add, no one is suggesting the refs care who wins.  But they absolutely do care about what gets called, what doesn't, and how the game is played. So if they make a decision to change the way a game is called, it can have a tangible impact.

The heat needs a loose whistle to be effective.  The refs have to be on board with this or it would've been very short-lived.

If Hunter played for MIA, he would be DPOY with literally no change in how he plays defense.  That's a problem imho.

This is so true. They give Butler too much benefit of the doubt. Miami also does a lot of defensive foul baiting where they grab and pull the offensive player or the player blocking out for rebound and then flop back as soon as they player offers any resistance.  The refs fell for it a couple of times today but they didn’t call a lot of that crap today which was good.

I don't disagree.   I just hate to see when DJ gets a steal, he starts a break and he's the only one breaking.   You also have to have the mentality to run and we don't really have it.

Fair points but it seems fairly clear we need to play faster.  Getting stops is key but, let's be honest, there's been several games where we've absolutely struggled to keep up with teams who's defense is subpar but who make it a point to play fast.

Don't get me wrong, I do understand the role of playing better defense here.  But, for us, we basically play into the defense's hands by allowing them to get set exactly how they want every time.
